Suitable for English speakers.
DAS FESTIVAL ist eine Produktion von Herbordt/Mohren (‚Die Institution‘), in Koproduktion mit den Donaueschinger Musiktagen 2019 und dem Theater Rampe, gefördert durch dreijährige Konzeptionsförderungen des Kulturamtes der Stadt Stuttgart, des Fonds Darstellende Künste aus Mitteln der Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien und des Landesverbandes Freie Tanz- und Theaterschaffende Baden-Württemberg aus Mitteln des Ministeriums für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg.
Das Festival is part of Die Institution, the label under which Melanie Mohren and Bernhard Herbordt present new performance formats between art and research, everyday life and stage. Since 2012, when Die Institution first appeared in public with an 11-day Durational Performance, more than eleven productions have been created: What else can an institution, a performance, an office, a monologue, an audience, a village or a movement be?
The performative statements of Die Institution focus on programmatic questions such as: How do practices of (self-)critique present themselves in institutions? Which models of self-organization, transparency assurance and participation are established? Which principles of collaboration, solidarity and commonality are installed? Where are institutions located between internationalization and local responsibility? Which social change processes do they take up? Or which social change processes can be initiated by them? What knowledge do they produce? On how many fictions are institutions based?
“This is not, however, a walk through institutions, but rather an appropriation and reconstruction of institutions: ‘institution hacking’ if you will.“ (Robert Seyfert in: Melanie Mohren and Bernhard Herbordt, Die Institution, Berlin 2017)
With Das Festival, Die Institution now presents a fictitious festival. A performative reflection on the possibilities and impossibilities of international distribution channels for art. There is a collection of impossible program contributions (impossible because they refuse to be transferred to other contexts in radical site-specific terms, because they are still under construction, have long since disappeared, have never existed at all, or were never allowed to be realized); performers who address these impossibilities; children and young people who perform miniatures of New Music in the temporary festival center; visitors who travel to art hotels, international academies, and model organizations on invented (or buried) routes. Das Festival is an impossible travelogue – the celebration of another world order. Boundless and more in solidarity than the present one.
The Bureau Baubotanik from Stuttgart is marking a fictitious festival area, which is setting up a transitional architecture for its operation: with waiting area, reception, archive, stage and festival centre. Visitors can be guided through the site in small groups or explore it for themselves using an app made available for download. Meanwhile, children can practice interpreting commissioned works by renowned composers in the festival centre, while they are being looked after.
“The institution that performs itself marks various places that enable participation in the collective, within the contingent and temporary society that forms or gathers here. [–] Different systems of order are brought into disagreement, as Rancière says, and asked about the possibilities and conditions of social action: Who participates? And why? In reference to the usual allocation of spatial positions and behaviours, it is insisted that everything could also be different. In this way, theatre incorporates various places and systems of rules and opens up explicit wanderings and aberrations that make instituent practices identifiable as such, negotiable and playable“. (Esther Boldt in: Melanie Mohren and Bernhard Herbordt, Vorgestellte Institutionen, Berlin 2015)
Within the framework of Die Institution Herbordt/Mohren cooperate with such diverse partners as the Stuttgarter Theater Rampe, the Sophiensaele Berlin, the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart, the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt, the International Research Centre for Interweaving Performance Cultures at the Freie Universität Berlin, the KIT Karlsruhe, the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, the University of Gothenburg, the Westdeutscher Rundfunk and many others. Die Institution is currently setting up what is probably the first exhibition depot for the performing arts in a former crafts enterprise in the south of Stuttgart: a research institution, archive, warehouse and theatre institution in a model format. Among other things, existing productions of Die Institution will be bookable here on demand as 1-to-1 performances or staged as meeting platforms between actors from a wide variety of art forms, protagonists of civil urban society and neighbours who would like to become one or the other.
Children and families welcome!
